ABSU: All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) is a nationalist student organization of the Bodos as a whole that works to improve the lives of the Bodo people through various educational, cultural, and social development initiatives. The motto of the ABSU is Unity, Survival and Prosperity.

About All Bodo Students Union

The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), known as “दुलाराय बर’ फरायसा आफाद” (Dularai Boro Poraisa Aafad) in Bodo, is a prominent non-political student organization established on February 15, 1967, at the Kokrajhar Tribal Rest House, in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) of Assam.

ABSU operates independently of political affiliations, with its primary mission being the unity and empowerment of the Bodo community. Initially, its constitution was accepted and printed on March 2, 1969. Still, it has evolved over the years with periodic updates to meet its member’s and the community’s changing needs.

The All Bodo Students Union as 3 organization level and they are-

Central Committee, ABSU (also known as C.C. ABSU)– The Central Committee, ABSU refers to the central governing body of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU). The Central Committee plays a key role in decision-making, organizing events, and spearheading various initiatives for the community’s growth. It serves as the main leadership body within ABSU, guiding its activities and policies.

District Committee ABSU (also known as D.C. ABSU)– The District Committee, ABSU is a regional branch of the ABSU that operates at the district level. Each district committee is responsible for implementing the initiatives, policies, and programs set by the central committee within its respective district. The district committee works closely with local communities to address the specific needs and concerns of Bodo students and people, focusing on areas such as education, cultural preservation, and social welfare. It also plays an important role in organizing events, raising awareness, and advocating for the rights of the Bodo community at the local level.

Anchalik Committee ABSU (also known as A.C. ABSU)– The Anchalik Committee, ABSU is a local-level branch of the ABSU, functioning at the sub-district or block level, known as “Anchalik” in Bodo. This committee works to address the specific needs of the Bodo community within smaller regions or localities. The Anchalik Committee plays a key role in implementing the central and district-level initiatives, organizing events, and ensuring the welfare of Bodo students in its area.

The flag of the union features a deep yellow background with a black shield and crossed swords at the center, symbolizing the Bodos as a proud and heroic nation. The flag’s proportions are 3:2.

ABSU Constitution Amendments

The first edition of the All Bodo Students Union Constitution was not amended until 1981 and wasn’t reprinted until 1987.

1. First Amendment:

  • Under the Presidentship of Mr. Dipak Kumar Basumatary, the 1st amendment of the Constitution of ABSU was done till 1981 in the convention of ABSU held at Udalguri Higher Secondary School.
  • Limited to three District Committe of ABSU as per geo-political district.
  • Rejected double organizational membership.

2. Second Amendment:

  • This amendment was also held under the Presidentship Mr. Dipak Kumar Basumatary.
  • Radical amendment was done through Complete redrafting of the constitution by a special committee.

3. Third Amendment:

  • The amendment took place on 26, 27 and 28 September 1983 during the 16th Annual Conference of the ABSU at Dhamdhama.
  • This amendment was also held under the Presidentship Mr. Dipak Kumar Basumatary.
  • Added political clauses and declared ABSU a nationalist student organization.

4. Fourth Amendment:

  • The amendment took place on on 28, 29 and 30 December 1984 during the 17th Annual Conference at Kokrajhar College under the Presidentship of Mr. Karendra Basumatary.
  • Converted to a four-tier organizational structure of the union.
  • Included a state committee and the West Bengal committee.

5. Fifth Amendment:

  • The amendment took place on 29, 30, and 31 May 1986 during the 18th Annual Conference at Rowta Chariali.
  • Amendment was held under the Presidentship of Mr. Karendra Basumatary.
  • Included provisions for advisors and changed the provisions of amendment.

6. Sixth Amendment:

  • On 28 and 29 September 1986, under the leadership of Upendranath Brahma a special delegates session of ABSU was held at Chaharia Batabari village near Dhing, Nagaon
  • Amended the preamble and added clauses (f) to (j) under “Aims and Objectives.”
  • All Bodo Students Union’s perspective widened

7. Seventh Amendment:

where ABSU’s motto of “Unity, Survival and Prosperity” had been inserted and the Guwahati District Committee, ABSU was increased.

  • The amendment took place on 18, 19, 20 and 21 February 1987 during the 19th Annual Conference at Dudhnoi under the leadership of Mr. Upendra Nath Brahma.
  • Added ABSU’s motto “Unity, Survival and Prosperity.”
  • Increased the Guwahati District Committee, ABSU

8. Eight Amendment

  • After 18 years gap from 1987 the constitution of ABSU was amended and reprinted
  • The amendment took place on 14, 15, and 16 February 2005 during the 37th Annual Conference held at Baksa, Mushalpur under the Pesidentsip of M. Rabiram Narzary.
  • Section 21 of Chapter V has been amended to create new positions: four secretaries, an assistant literary secretary, an assistant sports secretary, an education secretary, and an assistant education secretary.

ABSU Aims and Objectives

Here are a few aims and objectives of the All Bodo Students Union:

  • To promote the language, literature, and culture of the Bodos.
  • Propagate the education through the mother tongue (Bodo language) among the masses
  • Improve and develop the Bodo language and literature through various literary activities, publication works etc.
  • Safeguard and develop the culture of the Bodos
