Bodo MLA In BTR 2025 | Bodoland | Assam

List of Bodo MLA in BTR, Assam: There are 126 MLAs in Assam, out of which 11 MLAs are from BTR, also known as Bodoland. In this article, we’ll share the details of the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Bodo community of the BTR area.

On August 11, 2023, the Election Commission of India published the final delimitation of Assembly Constituencies in Assam. This delimitation process increased the number of Assembly Constituencies in the Bodoland districts, growing from 11 to 15. The newly established constituencies in Bodoland are as follows:

  1. Kokrajhar: Two new constituencies added.
  2. Baksa: One new constituency added.
  3. Udalguri: One new constituency was added.

BTR District-Wise MLA Seats

The Bodoland, officially known as Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), consists of 5 districts of Assam. There are 12 MLA seats in BTR. Out of 12 MLA assembly constituencies, 6 are reserved for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) people.

The BTR district-wise MLA seats are detailed below:

Kokrajhar District

Kokrjhar district under BTR has 3 MLA seats, the three MLA assembly constituencies of Kokrajhar district of Assam are shared below.

Note: The 65 Kalaigaon constituency covers parts of the Udalguri and Darrang districts, but its boundaries are not clearly defined. Durga Das Boro from the BPF party won the MLA election for this constituency.

Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2021

The Assam Assembly Election 2021 was held in three Phases 27 March, 1 and 6 April 2021. The result was declared on 2 May 2021. Bodo candidates from the BTR contested in the MLA election from different political parties like UPPL, BPF, BJP, INC, and a few independently. Boro candidates won a total of 11 MLA seats in the 2021 Assam legislative assembly election from Bodoland. They are:

  1. 7 Bodo MLAs won from UPPL party
  2. 3 Bodo MLAs won from BPF party
  3. 2 Bodo MLA from BJP party

There are 11 MLA constituencies in Bodoland, 3 in Kokrjahar, 2 in Chirang, 3 in Baksa, and 4 in Udalguri. All the 11 MLAs are from the Bodo community. Following is the list of the Boro MLA in BTR, along with their name, constituency, district and Political Party.

Note:

  • MLA Ajoy Kumar Roy from Bijni LAC in Chirang district from BJP party is only the non-Bodo candidate.
  • Some part of the Kalaigon constituency falls under the Udalguri district and Mangaldoi district. The MLA Durga Das Boro from BPF party won the MLA seats in Kalaigaon constituency, we have included the same in the Udalguri district.
  • MLA Shri Urkhao Gwra Brahma from Chapaguri (ST) LAC in Baksa district is being inducted as Cabinet Minister from UPPL political Party out of 11 MLAs from Bodos. He is now both MLA and Minister.
  • MLA Biswajit Daimary from Panery LAC in Udalguri from BJP party is inducted as the Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly.

Bypoll Election 2021

COVID 19 took the lives of 2 MLAs of BTR in 2021. These two MLAs were MLA Majendra Narzary from the Gossaigaon constituency and MLA Leho Ram Boro from the Tamulpur constituency. 

Because of the sudden death of the MLAs, a by-election was conducted on 30 October 2021, and the result was declared on 2 November 2021. 

  1. Shri Jiron Basumatary won the MLA seat from Gossaigon LAC in the by-election.
  2. Sri Jolen Daimary won the MLA seat from Tamulpur LAC in the by-election.

Bypoll Election 2024

The by-elections for five Assam Assembly seats were held on November 13, 2024, with the results declared on November 23, 2024. The by election was held as the seats became vacant after the MLAs who represented them were elected as Members of Parliament in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The by elections 2024 winners were-

  1. Nihar Rannjan Das won from Dholai LAC in Cachar (SC reserved).
  2. Nirmal Kumar Brahma won the Sidli bye election 2024 from Sidli LAC in Chirang (ST reserved).
  3. Diptimayee Choudhury won from Bongaigaon LAC in Bongaigaon.
  4. Diganta Ghatowal won from Behali LAC in Sonitpur.
  5. Diplu Ranjan Sarma won from Samaguri LAC in Nagaon.

  1. INC Candidate Shri Jadab Swargiary won from the Dudhnai (ST) 36 No. LAC under Goalpara district.

Some Lesser Known Facts about the MLAs from the Boro community.

  • Rupnath Brahma is the first Bodo MLA and Minister from the Bodo community. He contested from the Indian National Congress (INC) party at 31 Sidli LAC, reserved for ST and won twice in 1951 and 1962.
  • Pramila Rani Brahma is the longest-serving Bodo MLA from the Bodo community. She has been elected six times from the 30 Kokrajhar East LAC, reserved for ST from 1991 to 2016.
  • Rekha Rani Das Boro is the first Bodo woman MLA from the Bodo community. She was elected to MLA in 1985, thus making her the first. She won again in 1996. Both her win came from the 62 Barama LAC, reserved for ST.
