Six Tribal Languages the Medium of Instruction: At the Assam Cabinet Meeting on 23 February 2024, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, important decisions were made, such as six tribal languages being introduced as a medium of instruction. As per the NEP 2020, 6 tribal languages (Mising, Rabha, Karbi, Tiwa, Deori and Dimasa) are to be introduced as a medium of instruction.

Six Tribal Languages the Medium of Instruction Notification
On February 19, 2025, the Assam government released a notification announcing that six tribal languages (Mising, Rabha, Karbi, Tiwa, Dimasa, and Deuri) will now serve as the medium of instruction at the foundation stage of education. After this stage, these languages will be gradually shifted to a regional language as the medium of instruction.

This initiative aims to promote and preserve the region’s indigenous languages while ensuring that students are proficient in a language widely used for communication and integration within the state.
Mising Language as the Medium of Instruction
For the 2025-26 academic year, 200 schools have been initially selected under the School Education Department for lower primary education (Grades 1 to 5). These schools will follow a three-language formula, including Mising, Assamese, and English.
