Bodoland Martyrs Day

Every year, 12 June is observed as Bodoland Martyrs Day, commemorating the first Martyr of the Bodoland Movement – Late Sujit Narzary, and all the members and cadres who have sacrificed their priceless lives for the Bodoland statehood movement. There is no more tremendous sacrifice known to man/woman than giving one’s life to safeguard the community.

Late Sujit Narzary is recognized as the first Martyr of the Bodoland movement. He tragically lost his life on 12 June 1987, at the tender age of 15 years and 5 months, during the movement led by Bodofa Upendranath Brahma (1956-1990).

He was very brutally killed by chauvinist anti-tribal Assamese at Tihu Chowk, Nalbari, on his way back to the Kokrajhar after participating in a grand mass gathering at judges field in Guwahati seeking separate Bodoland statehood. His death anniversary is observed as Bodoland Martyrs Day.

The Bodo community has been observing Bodoland Martyrs Day for 36 years. However, the BTR (Bodoland Territorial Region) government has officially declared that June 12 will be recognized as Martyrs Day.

This annual observance is dedicated to honouring the death anniversary of Lt. Sujit Narzary, who was acknowledged as the first martyr of the Bodoland movement.

Under this government declaration, all offices of the relevant departments and educational institutions in the Bodoland Territorial Region will observe the day, ensuring that normal functions continue without interruption.

Martyr Sujit Narzary Memorial Auditorium

During the BTR Budget 2024-25 session held on June 18 and 19 at the BTCLA House in Bodofa Nwgwr, Kokrajhar, it was announced that the BTR Government would initiate the construction of the Martyr Sujit Narzary Memorial Auditorium at 40 locations, one in each MCLA constituency. The estimated cost for each auditorium is Rs. 1 crore, totalling Rs. 40 crores for all locations.

The construction of the Martyr Sujit Narzary Memorial Auditorium is progressing steadily, with several sections already completed and others in the works. As of now, the foundation stone for the Memorial Auditorium Hall has been laid in various locations. Here’s an update on the construction progress:

  4. Foundation Stone Laying for the Martyr Sujit Narzary Memorial Auditorium at Khagrabari – Scheduled for 13th March 2024.
  5. Foundation Stone for the Martyr Sujit Narzary Memorial Auditorium Hall at Ansumwi – Laid on 21st February 2025.
  6. Martyr Sujit Narzary Memorial Auditorium at Manas Serfang – Completed on 23rd February 2025.
  7. Martyr Sujit Narzary Memorial Auditorium at Kalaigaon – Completed on 6th January 2025.
  8. Martyr Sujit Narzary Memorial Auditorium at Kajalgaon – Scheduled for completion on 23rd March 2025.
