Every year 12 June is observed as Bodoland martyrs day, commemorating the first Martyr of the Bodoland Movement – Late Sujit Narzary, and all the members and cadres who have sacrificed their priceless lives for the Bodoland statehood movement. There is no greater sacrifice known to man/woman other than giving one’s life in the safeguarding of the Community.
Sujit Narzary – First Martyr of Bodoland Movement
Late Sujit Narzary, recognized as the first Martyr of the Bodoland movement. He tragically lost his life on 12 June 1987, at the tender age of 15 years and 5 months during the movement led by Bodofa Upendranath Brahma (1956-1990).
He was very brutally killed by chauvinist anti-tribal Assamese at Tihu Chowk, Nalbari, on his way back to the Kokrajhar after participating in a grand mass gathering at judges field in Guwahati seeking separate Bodoland statehood. His death anniversary is observed as Bodoland Martyrs Day.

Though the Bodo community has been observing Bodoland Martyrs Day for the last 36 years, the BTR Bodoland Territorial Region government has officially announced that June 12 will be recognized as Martyrs Day.
This Boroland Martyrs Day annual observance day is dedicated to honoring the death anniversary of Lt Sujit Narzary, recognized as the first martyr of the Bodoland movement.
