The Hill Districts of Assam 2025
Assam is home to three autonomous hill district-Dima Hasao, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong. These districts enjoy special administrative status under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, allowing them greater autonomy in governance.
Both districts are rich in cultural diversity, with various indigenous communities and unique traditions that contribute significantly to Assam’s cultural landscape. All the Assam Hill Districts falls under the Central Division.

Dima Hasao
Dima Hasao, formerly known as North Cachar Hills, is an autonomous hill district in the state of Assam, India. It is home to diverse tribal communities, including the Dimasa, Zeme Naga, Hmar, and others. The district is known for its hilly terrain, natural beauty, and cultural richness. Dima Hasao is administered by the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, granting it a degree of self-governance.
East Karbi Anglong
East Karbi Anglong is one of the two districts formed after the bifurcation of the former Karbi Anglong district in Assam, the other being West Karbi Anglong. It is part of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and enjoys special administrative status under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The region is inhabited by various ethnic communities, mainly the Karbis, and is known for its hilly landscape, rich forest cover, and cultural diversity.
West Karbi Anglong
West Karbi Anglong is a hill district in the state of Assam, formed in 2016 after the bifurcation of the original Karbi Anglong district. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and enjoys special administrative powers under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The district is primarily inhabited by the Karbi community along with other tribal groups.
