Upendra Nath Brahma is fondly remembered as the “BODOFA,” meaning “Father of Bodos.” The Bodofa title was conferred upon him in recognition of his advanced vision and leadership for his Bodo community. His birth anniversary (31 March) is now be celebrated as STUDENTs DAY in Assam starting from year 2023 (announced by the Government of Assam on 26 March 2023).
The Bodo community, since the beginning (ABSU, other organizations, and Bodo leaders), celebrated 31st March as Boro student day every year in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and other places.
Upendra Nath Brahma was born on 31 March 1956 in the Boragari village of Dotma in Kokrajhar, BTR, Assam, India. He was named the President of Goalpara ABSU in 1978 and Vice President and President of Central ABSU in 1981 and 1986, respectively. Assam Students Day 2025 | Chatra Divas Date
Student Day Celebration in Assam: Assam Students Day, or Chatra Divas, or Foraisa San, is an annual event observed in Assam on 31 March every year. The day marks the birthday of former student leader Upendra Nath Brahma. Upendra was an M.Sc in Physics, Income Tax Inspector Officer, and Science Teacher who also served as the President of Central ABSU. He was known for his “Non-Violent Bodoland Movement” and the famous slogan “Live and Let Live.” Hence, in his honor, the Assam government announced his birthday, 31 March, to be observed as Student Day.
Students’ Day: History
The Government of Assam (GOA) announced the celebration of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma’s birth anniversary as Student Day on March 31st, 2023. This declaration, made on March 26th, 2023, is a tribute to the contributions of the social reformer, the late Bodofa UN Brahma. It’s a commendable initiative by the GOA to honor and preserve the legacy of Bodofa UN Brahma. The declaration was also featured in a print advertisement in the Bodosa – Bodo Newspaper

Assam’s Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced Student Day via tweet. He wrote, “Government of Assam, in a historic move, dedicates 31st March as Student Day to pay tribute to Shri Upendra Nath Brahma, the great social reformer, who was born on 31st March 1956. The Students Day will be observed in all educational institutions as special homage to the student leader.”

About Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma
He was born on 31 March 1956 in Boragari, Dotma, Kokrajhar, BTR, Assam, India. His full name was Upendra Nath Brahma. In 1986, he was elected President of the Central All Bodo Student Union (ABSU). Before becoming president, he was VP of Central ABSU in 1981 and President of Goalpara ABSU in 1978.
Upendra Nath Brahma education wise, he was M.Sc. in Physics from Gauhati University. Work experience-wise, he was an Income Tax Inspector (Officer) in Guwahati and a Science Teacher at Nehru Vocational High School in Gossainichina, Dotma.
Bodoland Movement
Upendra Brahma started the Non-Violent Bodoland Movement with the popular slogan “Live and Let Live”.
