About World Weightlifting Championship
The World Weightlifting Championships (WWC) is an annual international competition, except during Summer Olympic Games years. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), based in Lausanne, Switzerland, is responsible for organizing and managing this event. As the primary governing body for the sport, the IWF oversees global weightlifting activities.
In addition to the flagship World Weightlifting Championships, the IWF also coordinates global championships for Youth and Juniors.
The initial recognized World Championship occurred in 1891, with Edward Lawrence Levy from England emerging as the winner. This occurrence happened before the IWF was formally established in 1905.
Athletes in Olympic weightlifting have two main techniques for raising the barbell overhead.
- Snatch: The snatch is a wide-grip, one-motion lift.
- Clean & Jerk: The clean and jerk consists of two parts: first lifting the weight from the ground to the shoulders (the clean), then from the shoulders to overhead (the jerk).
In competitions, each weightlifter gets three chances for both the snatch and the clean and jerk, starting with the snatch. The athlete’s score is the combined total weight (in kilograms) of their heaviest successful lifts in each category.
