Bineswar Brahma popularly known as Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma, was a great versatile leader of the Boro community. He was the former president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS), and former Deputy General Manager of Food Corporation of India (FCI) for the northern region. He was shot death by the Bodo Militant (NDFB) on 19 Aug 2000 at his Bhetapara residence in Guwahati when he was the president of the BSS.

Bineswar Brahma is Known for Literary Works and Social Works

Literary Works

Brahma was a noted writer. He had contributed a lot to the Bodo literatue upliftment immensely and cannot be expressed.

Social Works

  • Brahma was a prominent intellectual, social thinkers of Bodo community.
  • He was one of the leader who convinced the National leaders in Delhi to include the Bodo language in the 8th schedule as an Indian language.
  • He always desired a peaceful society in the region i.e., he requested people to oppose acts of terror.

Cause of Death

Brahma was against extremist activities in the state and across the north eastern region and was very vocal against militancy and had always urged the government for solutions through political dialogue.

The Bodo militant NDFB has been demanding Roman script since their formation. But Brahma’s idea of adopting Devanagiri script for Bodo language which was later endorsed by Bodo Sahitya Sabha withdrawing support of NDFB demand on Feb 2000 in BSS conference held in Simbargaon had angered the NDFB. The NDFB was pressuring the BSS to adopt Roman script for the Bodo language. After the BSS withdrawal of support, the NDFB later killed the Bineswar Brahma (then the president of BSS) on Aug 19, 2000 in Guwahati.

Bineswar Brahma Remembered

Every year, the late martyr Bineswar Brahma is remembered or recalled on his death anniversary. A day long program is organized under the aegis of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, in association with Bineswar Brahma Charitable Trust (BBCT).

This year 2022 too, the 22nd death anniversary of martyr Bineswar Brahma was observed at his burial place, Chandmari, in Kokrajhar. Leaders from Bodo community inlcuding BSS, ABSU, ABWWF, All Bodo Primary Teacher Association (ABPTA), and political parties, officials of the BTC governments, and many intellectuals, and people from all walks of life attend the ceremony and pay rich tributes to the Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma.

On this day, Bodo Sahitya Sabha president hoist their BSS flag half mast as a respect.

A one-minute silence condolence was also observed on the occasion to mark the anniversary observation.

The BTR Chief, Pramod Boro graced the occassion and said that

“Today the Bodo community remembers Subungthini Thandwi martyr Bineswar Brahma. He was a social thinker and noted writer among the Bodos.”

He said that Subungthini Thandwi martyr Bineswar Brahma was the harbinger of peace in the region. He further added that late Brahma was an extraordinary leader of the sabha as well of the Bodo community. Despite a high official responsibility in FCI, Brahma dedicated his life for development and language upliftment of the Bodo community.

Assam Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma too graced the event and said that

Minister Brahma while recalling contributions of Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma on the anniversary, “Bineswar Brahma was a harbinger of peace among the Bodo peoples and devoted his life towards upliftment of the common masses. He had been stressed about the end of extremism incidents in the state.”

Bodo Sahitya Sabha president Toren Boro said,

“Today the Bodo Sahitya Sabha and Bineswar Brahma Charitable Trust jointly observed the death anniversary and remembered his contributions in the field of Bodo language and literature.”

Open Seminar

An open seminar/lecture/discussion on the contribution in the filed of Bodo language, literature and life philosophy of Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma was held during the function with Toren Boro, Bodo Sahitya Sabha president in the chair.

Souvenir titled – Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma

A souvenir titled ‘Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma’ was also released on 18th death anniversary event of late Brahma.

Bineswar Brahma Engineering College (BBEC), Kokrajhar

An engineering college was inaugurated in 2008 in the village Chandrapara approx 5 km from Kokrajhar town. The college was named after the later Bineswar Brahma. So we proudly have a college in name of our great leader – Bineswar Brahma Engineering College, Kokrajhar.
