Sarbeswar Basumatary: “Padma Awards 2024”, one of the highest civilian awards in India, were announced on the occasion of the 75th Republic Day on 26 January 2024. Among the distinguished awardees, Sarbeswar Basmatary from the Chirang District of Assam has received the prestigious Padma Shri award for the year 2024 in the field of Agriculture. Sarbeswar Basumatary belongs to the Bodo Community of BTR Region of Assam.
Altogether, a total of three from Assam were selected for the prestigious Padma Awards 2024 (Highest Civilian Award of the country).
Padma Awards 2024
Padma Awards are one of the Highest Civilian Awards in India, which are conferred in three categories:
- Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service.
- Padma Bhushan is for distinguished service of high order.
- Padma Shri is for distinguished service in any field.
The Awards are given in various disciplines or fields of activities such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. These awards are announced on 26 January, on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
The list of Padma Awards comprises 5 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan, and 110 Padma Shri Awards. Among the distinguished awardees, three from Assam were chosen for the prestigious Padma Shree awards for the year 2024. Altogether, 30 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 8 persons from the category of Foreigners NRI/PIO/OCI and 9 Posthumous awardees.
Parbati Baruah, also known as ‘Hathi ki Pari’ from the Dhubri district of Assam in the field of Social Work, The Assam Gaurav Award Winner Sarbeswar Basumatary from the Chirang district of Assam in the field of Other – Agriculture, and a noted folk artiste from Assam, Drona Bhuyan have received the Padmashree Award in the field of Art.

Agriculturist Sarbeswar Basumatary, also known as “Chirang Ke Krishi Chiraag” is selected to be conferred with the Padmashree Award 2024. He is the 4th Person to have been conferred with the Padmashri Award from Govt of India from the Bodo community.
From humble beginnings as a daily wage laborer, Sarbeswar Basumatary’s unwavering determination and passion have transformed him into a beacon of inspiration for the agricultural community. His resilience, coupled with his relentless pursuit of excellence, serves as a guiding light for farmers across Assam.
61-year-old Sarbeswar Basumatary is a daily wager turned farmer from Chirang who successfully adopted a mixed-integrated farming approach and cultivated varieties of crops like coconuts, oranges, paddy, litchis, and maize. He gets the Padma Shri Award 2024 in the field of Agriculture.
The Agriculturist Sarbeswar Basumatary was also received the Assam Gaurav Award 2022.
Padma Shri Award Ceremony
The Padma Awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/April every year. For the year 2024, the President has approved the conferment of 132 Padma Awards including 2 duo cases (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one).
