About Kokrajhar Govt College
Kokrajhar Government College established in 1959 is the oldest college in the Korkajhar district. It offers Arts and Science stream courses to the students. The college takes admission for HS, UG, and PG courses and even certificate courses too. They also have an IGNOU study center, wherein students can take different courses of IGNOU via Kokrajhr Govt. College.
Kokrajhar University Bill 2024
The Assam Legislative Assembly approved the Kokrajhar University bill during the Assam Budget 26 February 2024, following the guidelines of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020). This transformation means Kokrajhar University will focus on teaching, research, affiliation, and a semi-residential model. Additionally, it will set up an Open and Distance Learning Centre within the university.

KGC University Upgradation Status
KGC to “The Kokrajhar University”
The Kokrajhar Government College underwent an upgrade into “The Kokrajhar University” on February 26, 2024, through the enactment of the Kokrajhar University Act, 2024. The decision to upgrade had been under consideration since 2021.
As per the Act, the upgrade aims to constitute and establish a teaching, research-oriented, affiliating and semi-residential University, including the establishment of open and distance learning (ODL) facilities. The Act also specifies the transfer of the college’s property, land, buildings, and liquid assets to Kokrajhar University, effective from the date of its commencement.
Upgradation Plan of KGC News
The Kokrajhar Government College established in 1959 is currently affiliated with Bodoland University, Kokrajhar. Before the establishment of Bodoland University, it was affiliated with Gauhati University.
The Assam CM, Himanta Biswa Sharma on 18 Dec 2021 informed via a Twitter page that the Kokrajhar Govt College will be converted into a University.
After the Assam CM announcement, the CEM of BTC, Pramod Boro on 4 Feb 2022 shared an update via tweet, “Held a joint meeting with the Kokrajhar Govt. College Teacher’s Association & officials of Education Dept, BTC regarding the recent announcement of upgrading Kokrajhar Government College to a University.
