Assam at Ranji Trophy
The Assam Cricket Team (ACT), representing the state of Assam, made its first Ranji Trophy appearance in the 1948–49 season under the captaincy of Rupert Kettle. Assam won their first match in the 1951–52 Ranji Trophy Round 1 against Orissa by 103 runs, but in Round 2, they faced defeat, losing to Bengal by 413 runs.
Until the end of the 2001–02 season, they played in the East Zone. Following the discontinuation of the zonal system that same year, they moved up to the elite group starting from 2002-03 season. A rough patch in the 2005–06 season led to their relegation to the plate division, but they recovered to the elite group in the 2009–10 season. To be mentioned, Assam did not participate in the Ranji Trophy during the 2007–08 and 2008–09 seasons.
Despite topping the plate group and making it to the Super League, they faced relegation again in the 2010–11 season. Remarkably, during the 2014–15 Ranji season, Assam reclaimed Elite Group standing. The 2015–16 Ranji Trophy marked a historic achievement as they reached the semi-finals for the first time.
