Indian Super League Introduction
The Indian Super League (ISL), also known as Hero ISL, is a professional men’s football league that serves as the top division in the Indian Football system. Initially starting with 8 teams, the league currently comprises 12 clubs.
The league was officially established on October 21, 2013, as a new era for Indian football. With an initial eight-team lineup, including Atlético de Kolkata, Bangalore Titans, Delhi Dynamos, Goa, Kerala Blasters, Mumbai City, NorthEast United, and Pune City, the ISL began its first season on October 12, 2014, with Atlético de Kolkata securing a 3-0 victory against Mumbai City at the Salt Lake Stadium.
During the 2017-18 season, a noteworthy transformation took place as the league expanded to ten teams with the inclusion of Bengaluru and Jamshedpur. This alteration resulted in a six-month season and earned AFC recognition. Following this season, Pune City ceased operations, paving the way for Hyderabad FC. Concurrently, Delhi Dynamos relocated and underwent rebranding as Odisha FC.
In 2020, Kolkata’s East Bengal and Mohun Bagan joined, bringing the total teams to 11. From the 2023-24 season onwards, the league welcomed its first promoted club, RoundGlass Punjab FC, as part of Indian football’s restructuring. This shift increased the total number of today ISL match clubs to 12.
Importance and Evolution of the ISL
The Indian Super League (ISL), despite not initially being recognized by AFC and FIFA, has now climbed to become India’s top football league.
In the year 2017, both the AFC and FIFA extended acknowledgment to the ISL, enabling clubs’ participation with the highest group stage points in ISL for the AFC Cup starting from 2019.
Due to changes in the AFC Club Competitions Ranking system, ISL clubs won’t be able to participate in the AFC Champions League anymore starting from 2024-25 season. Instead, the league champion will go to the AFC Cup group stage.
Note: The 2022-23 season marked a noteworthy achievement as the ISL became sole top-tier league in India.
How many Foreign players are allowed to play in ISL?
As per the AIFF’s rules, from the ISL 2021-22 season onwards, teams are allowed to have up to six foreign players in their squad. This includes one player specifically from the AFC quota. However, in a single match, a maximum of four foreign players are permitted to participate.
