Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma: The Govt of Assam has announced on 26 March 2023 that the birth anniversary of the late Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma on 31 March henceforth would be celebrated as Student Day in Assam in all the educational institutes (schools, colleges, universities, and associates). It is a very good step taken by the Assam Government to keep the legacy of Bodofa UN Brahma ALIVE.
Upendra Nath Brahma was a Bodo Social Activist and a student leader of the All Bodo Student Union (ABSU). He spearheaded the ‘non-violent Bodoland Movement’ to carve out a separate state ‘Bodoland’ from Assam. He popularized the slogan “Live and Let Live” against the tyranny of the then Assam Govt.

Upendranath Brahma was born on 31 March 1956 at Boragari village near Dotma, a small township in the Kokrajhar district of Assam, India. He was the son of the Hindu Bodo couple Monglaram Brahma and Lefsri Brahma. He was the fifth and youngest child. He was called “Thopen” during his childhood.

Education Life
Upendra Nath Brahma Education Details
From 1963, Brahma studied at various schools, including Dotma High School, Kokrajhar High School in 1973, at Sakti Ashram High and Vocational School under the guidance of Swamiji. In 1975, he passed the matriculation examination (class 10) in the first division with letter marks in Mathematics. He secured 67% marks in the examination.
After that, he obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) honors degree in Physics from Cotton College before enrolling at Guwahati University in 1981 for his MSc degree.
Brahma also worked as a graduate science teacher at the Nehru Vocational High School in Gossainichina and studied for a Bachelor of Arts (BA) at Kokrajhar Govt College during that period. He obtained his BA in 1985 and his MSc in 1986. He had also been admitted to study law on a Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB) course in 1984, but this ended abruptly because he was bullied.

Political Life
He lectured in many parts of Assam on discrimination against the Bodo people. He claimed that they were treated as second-class citizens and that their young people had no employment opportunities upon completing their education. Assamese-speaking individuals mostly occupied jobs in Assam. But now the scene has changed with Bodos working all over Assam in top-ranking jobs with the introduction of ST and SC reserved quotas.
Leadership in ABSU
Brahma was elected Goalpara District Students Union president in 1978-79. He was vice president of the All Bodo Students Union between 1981–1983 and president from 1986. Through this body, he worked for the Bodo community’s rights, which he believed to be losing its culture and political rights. Under his leadership, the ABSU agreed to include political issues in its agenda.

Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma’s birth anniversary is celebrated as “Poraisa San” (Students Day) every 31st March by the Bodo community. The ABSU, the BTC government, and many other Bodo organizations have been enthusiastically following this Students Day celebration.

In 2023, the Assam government officially declared that the birth anniversary of the late Bodofa Upendra Brahma would be celebrated as STUDENT DAY or CHATRA DIVAS or FORAISA SAN in all of Assam. The student day celebration is not confined to Bodos anymore; everyone throughout Assam state will celebrate it. It is a great achievement for the Bodo tribe.
Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma will now be celebrated as Students Day in Assam starting this year. I express my gratitude towards the government of Assam for recognizing Bodofa’s significant contribution to our society and honoring him in this manner.

Bodofa Death Anniversary Observation 2023
Upendra Nath Brahma Death. Upendra Brahma died on 1 May 1990 due to blood cancer at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital in Mumbai. His body was taken to Kokrajhar and then buried at Thulungapuri in Dotoma on 4 May.
Bodofa Day
The death anniversary of Bodofa Upen Brahma is observed every year on 1st May at Thulungapuri, Dotma. His death anniversary is observed as ‘Bodofa Day’ all over Assam. The ABSU, politicians, renowned personalities, social activists, and close relatives pay homage to the tomb of Bodofa.
On 1 May 2023, Bodofa’s 33 death anniversary will be observed this year too.
Student Day 2023
Celebrating the birth anniversary of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma as the Student’s Day in Assam. In fact, it’s a proud moment for the sons of the soil of Assam. Grateful to the both Govt. of Assam and Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Government. He was the person who spearheaded the demand for a separate state of Bodoland.

Upendra Nath Brahma Trust
Upendra Nath Brahma Trust, abbreviated as UNBT, was established in July 1999, headquarters in Dotma (Birthplace of Bodofa) under the initiative of ABSU. Under this trust, the U.N. Academy School was founded.
UN Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award
The UNBT trust in the memory of ‘Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma’ started the Upendra Nath Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award. The Soldier of Humanity Award was conferred first time in 2004 to Mr. Jagen Basumatary (Tamra Patra Awardee, Freedom Fighter, and noted Social Activist of Assam.)
The award is given annually to social reformers, activists, eminent writers who stand for uplifting mankind, especially for the downtrodden people, to personalities who contribute towards a section of the particular society in terms of their socio-economic, politics, literature, culture, education through their various works. The award carries a sum of Rs. 200,000, a memento, and a citation.
