What is parliament’s simultaneous interpretation services?

Parliament’s simultaneous interpretation services provide real-time translation of speeches and debates into multiple languages. This allows all members of Parliament to understand and participate, no matter their preferred language.

During discussions, interpreters translate speeches live into other languages, and the translations are broadcast to members through headphones. This service is especially important in multilingual countries like India, where many regional languages are spoken. By offering this service, Parliament ensures everyone can communicate easily and be fairly represented, regardless of their language.

Bodo Language Added to Parliament Translations

India previously had 10 languages included in Parliament’s translation services, in addition to English and Hindi. These languages were Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu. With the recent inclusion of six more languages—Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Manipuri, Urdu, and Sanskrit—India’s translation services have expanded significantly.

Northeast Languages in Parliament’s Simultaneous Interpretation Services

As of today, only three Northeast Indian languages—Assamese, Manipuri, and Bodo—are recognized in Parliament under the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
