Assam Introduces Mising Language as the Medium of Instruction in Schools

Mising Language as the Medium of Instruction: On November 19, 2025, coinciding with the celebration of Ali Ai Ligang Day of the Mising community, the Assam government issued a notification. The announcement reveals that Mising language will now be introduced as a medium of instruction in lower primary schools (Grades 1 to 5) under the School Education Department.

This historic decision marks a significant step in promoting linguistic diversity and enhancing educational accessibility for Mising-speaking students, ensuring their cultural identity is preserved and integrated into their early education.

During the Assam Cabinet meeting on February 23, 2024, led by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, several key decisions were made, including the introduction of six tribal languages as a medium of instruction. In line with the NEP 2020, the languages- Mising, Rabha, Karbi, Tiwa, Deori, and Dimasa will be used as a medium of instruction.

On 19th February 2025, the Assam Government officially issued a notification to preserve and promote the Mising language and culture. In line with this, the Department of School Education has decided to introduce Missing as the medium of instruction in 200 Lower Primary (LP) schools across Assam, as detailed in the enclosed list in Annexure-A.

These schools will be officially categorized as Missing Medium Lower Primary Schools. This change will begin in the Academic Session 2025-26. This initiative ensures that Mising-speaking students will receive education in their native language, fostering cultural identity and supporting the educational needs of the Mising community.
