In an endeavor to foster sustainable livelihoods in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Tezpur University and the Government of BTR have embarked a momentous partnership, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 28th at Tezpur University’s KBR auditorium.
The MoU was signed by Shri Dhiraj Saud, Secretary, BTC and Dr. Biren Das, Registrar, Tezpur University in presence of Governor of Assam, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, Vice Chancellor, Tezpur University, Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, Chief Executive Member, BTC, Shri Pramod Boro, Vice President, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Shri Prasanta Boro, and other dignitaries.
As part of this collaboration a notable achievement emerged, the Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Chair was established at Tezpur University, which made it the first central university to honor Bodofa UN Brahma in this manner, paying a deserving tribute to the revered Father of the Bodo People and integrating his name into the national academic sphere.
The MoU focuses on Tezpur University providing knowledge support to enhance the economic, agricultural, and educational aspects of sustainable livelihoods in BTR, with an emphasis on agriculture. The partnership involves multidisciplinary research in areas like disease detection, food processing, and food engineering technologies, and other pertinent areas crucial for the growth and development of BTR’s agricultural sector..

Governor Kataria lauds BTR-Tezpur University Collaboration
As the chief guest , Governor of Assam, Shri Kataria, spoke about the significance of the occasion, describing it as the beginning of a new chapter for BTR and Tezpur University. He emphasized the importance of this collaboration in promoting academic and overall development in the state.
“I am glad that the MoU gives special emphasis on agriculture and developing agricultural-related products in the BTR. This is because the livelihood of the people of BTR is mainly based on agriculture and the region has lots of prospects which can be explored through this MoU,” Kataria said.
Furthermore, Governor Kataria conveyed his delight regarding the establishment of the Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Chair at Tezpur University.
“I am eagerly waiting to see the establishment of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Chair at Tezpur University. Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma’s contributions to the Bodo community and his dedication to their cause is a source of inspiration. Therefore, I congratulate Tezpur University and BTC administration for having a chair named after the doyen,” Kataria said.
Additionally, Governor Kataria inaugurated the IEEE Smart Village Project, an initiative that strives to establish a sustainable program for rural community development in Jhawani village, located in the Sonitpur district. This project seeks to improve rural livelihoods by introducing intelligent and sustainable technologies such as solar-powered plants, oil and pulse mills, cold storage facilities, and fisheries.
BTR CEM Pramod Boro Insights
While speaking as the guest of honor at the gathering, BTR (Bodoland Territorial Council) CEM (Chief Executive Member) Pramod Boro, acknowledged that the BTR is an underdeveloped area with limited employment prospects for the Bodo people.
“For years we have fought for our identity, and our leader Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma as thrived towards creating a better future for our community. Therefore, we need to embrace new ideas, create opportunities for our youth and invest in knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the 21st century,” Boro said.
“Through this MoU, we intend to drive innovation, enhance educational opportunities, and accelerate the overall growth of the region. Besides, we shall offer scholarships to five meritorious students, once the Upendra Nath Brahma chair is fully functional,” Boro further added.
Prof Singh Highlights Significance of MoU Signing and Education
In his speech, Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, the Vice Chancellor of TU, expressed that the signing of the MoU is a significant event that embodies progress, collaboration, and the realization of aspirations.
“BTC carries history, struggle and legacy of Bodo aspiration. Similarly, the establishment of Tezpur University is the outcome of the Assam movement, and therefore, the University has a greater responsibility to fulfil the aspiration of all stakeholders concerned. It is thus, no coincidence that Tezpur University and BTC are finding common areas of cooperation,” Singh said.
Singh lauded Pramod Boro for focusing on education.
Prof Singh commended CEM Pramod Boro for his emphasis on education, stating that he is pleased to see the BTC administration prioritizing it.
“I feel happy that the BTC administration is giving priority to education. Because you won’t find a society which is developed economically and culturally, but educationally backward,” Singh said.
Furthermore, Prof Singh mentioned that the approval to start the Upendra Nath Brahma Chair has been obtained from the Academic Council and Board of Management.
