Bodo Mothers Day 2023: 12 May is a historic day for the Bodo people. The death anniversary of Gaide Basumatary and Helena Basumatary is observed as Boro Bima Saan (Bodo Mother’s Day) every year on 12 May since their martyr on 12 May 1988, to commemorate their loss and sacrifice for the cause of the community.

Gaide and Helena Basumatary (15 years) were the first Bodo women martyrs laying their lives for the freedom of Bodoland. Their supreme sacrifice for the cause of the Bodo community is the source of inspiration who stands against brutalities and injustice towards innocent people.

Gaide and Helena Basumatary Killed

It was 12 May of 1988, and two brave Bodo women, Gaide Basumatary and Helena Basumatary, were brutally shot dead by Police in the Saraibil area under the Gossaigoan sub-division of Kokrajhar district. The Bodoland Movement was on a high pick, and they were trying to prevent the arrest of innocent villagers from the brutality of Assam police forces on that tragic day. Late Helena Basumatary and Late Gaide Basumatary were mothers of young childs that time.

This historic day, 12 May, is observed as “Bodo Mothers’ Day’ (Bodo Bima Saan) to commemorate their loss and sacrifice for the cause of the community. Our respect goes to all mothers of the Boro community on today’s occasion.
