List of Educational Institutions to be Setup in Bodoland

Upcoming Educational Institutions in Bodoland 2023: Bodoland, officially Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), will get many new educational institutions and other important institutions for the region’s development in the coming years.

3rd Bodo Peace Agreement

Bodo community signed a third tripartite agreement with the Govt of India (GOI) and Govt of Assam (GOA) on 27 Jan 2020 in New Delhi, in the presence of the Hon’ble Home Minister of India, Shri Amit Shah.

The leaders presenting the Bodo community in the 3rd Peace Accord were the All Bodo Student Union (ABSU), United Bodo People’s Organization (UBPO), and all four factions of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB).

In this 3rd Bodo peace accord, the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) has been renamed Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). So in this article, we’ll use BTR to represent the Bodoland.

New Educational Institutions Setup in BTR

Educational Institutions Establishment in BTR: As part of the Agreement of the 3rd BTR Accord 2020, the Government of India (GOI) and the Government of Assam (GOA) will set up many new Educational Institutions in the area of Bodoland (BTR).

Institutions to be Set Up by GOI in Bodoland

The following is the list of the 10 educational and other important institutions to be set up by the Government of India (GOI) as part of the 3rd Bodo Peace Accord 2020, signed on 27 Jan 2020.

1. Upendra Nath Brahma Central University | Baksa

The following is the list of the 10 educational and other important institutions to be set up by the Government of India (GOI) as part of the 3rd Bodo Peace Accord 2020, signed on 27 Jan 2020.

Regarding Central University, Bodoland (BTR) has only two universities in the BTR region.

  1. Bodoland University in Kokrajhar
  2.  Central Institute of Technology (CIT) in Kokrajhar

Baksa is one of the four districts of BTR; to date, there has yet to be a central university in Baksa district. As part of the 3rd Bodo Peace Accord, the GOI has agreed to build one Central University at Barama in Baksa. The upcoming central university in Baksa has been named Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Central University in respect of the late Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma.

Most of the local students of the Baksa district are currently studying for their master’s degree and Ph.D. at the Bodoland University in Kokrajhar, BTR area or outside the BTR for their studies. Once the central university is built in Baksa, students no longer need to go outside their district for higher education.

There has yet to be official data about the progress of the Upendra Nath Brahma Central University in the public domain; once we get information, we will share it with you.

2. National Sports University | Bodoland

The National Sports University is a central university offering specialized courses in sports through their undergraduate and postgraduate courses like UG courses – Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports (BPES), Bachelor of Science in Sports Coaching (BSc Sports Coaching), and PG courses like MPES, MSc Sports Coaching, and MA Sports Psychology.

Only one National Sports University in India is located in Imphal of Manipur state. Official website of the NSU Manipur – https://www.nsu.ac.in/

National Sports University in BTR

The Bodo community of the BTR is very good in Sports; they have excelled in Football, Boxing, Kabaddi, Wushu, Archery and many other sports and athletes. Soon, the BTR will also get the National Sports University (NSU) as part of the 3rd Bodo peace agreement. Bringing such a central sports university in the BTR region will help sports enthusiasts, players, and students pursue their sports careers professionally.

Setting up the National Sports University in Bodoland will be a great achievement for the region’s overall development in taking the sport to the next level.

There has yet to be concrete information regarding when the plan to establish a National sports university will be carried out.

3. Sports Authority of India (SAI) | Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri

Three NEW Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Bodoland

Bodoland, officially BTR, consists of four districts, and Kokrajhar, one of the districts of BTR, already has SAI STC in Kokrajhar City. Three new SAI centers will be developed in the other three districts of the BTR. 

As part of the deal signed by the GOI and Bodo community through the 3rd Peace Agreement, the Indian government will create and develop three new SAI centers in Bodoland (BTR area). These three new SAI centers will be built in the Chirang, Baksa, and Udalguri districts of the BTR region.

SAI in Chirang

Soon the Chirang district will get a Sports Authority of India (SAI) center. It will help the local youths to excel in their sporting career.

SAI in Baksa

Soon the Chirang district will get a Sports Authority of India (SAI) center. This new SAI in the region will help the local sports-loving students pursue their sports careers professionally.

SAI in Udalguri

Soon the Chirang district will get a Sports Authority of India (SAI) center. This new SAI in Udalguri will be a dream center for students inclined to make sports their career or profession.

SAI in Kokrajhar

To date, Kokrajhar is the only district with the SAI center at the heart of Kokrajhar – the city of Peace. The Kokrajhar SAI is categorized into

  • Kokrajhar STC (Sports Training Centre)
  •  Kokrajhar SAG (Special Area Games)

SAI STC: There are a total of 56 SAI STC in India. Three are in Assam

  1. Kokrajhar STC
  2. Golaghat STC
  3. Tinsukia STC

SAI SAG: There are a total of 20 SAI SAG in India. Two are in Assam,

  2. Tinsukia SAG

If the demand for three new SAI centers is built in the three districts of BTR, there will be four SAIs in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

4. Institute of Livelihood Management | Udalguri

The GOI will build a new Institute of Livelihood Management at Tangla in the Udalguri district as part of the 3rd Bodo peace accord deal. To date, there is no Institute of Livelihood Management in Bodoland.

5. North-East Regional Institute of Medical Science | Chirang

North-East Regional Institute of Medical Science at Rowmari, Chirang

Only a few educational institutions (schools, colleges, technical institutions etc.) are situated in the Chirang district, so the decision to set up a medical college would greatly benefit the local students and the overall region. The new medical college to be established by the name of North-East Regional Institute of Medical Science at Rowmari in Chirang district by GOI will be a great initiative for the whole of Chirang district.

Chirang district is part of the BTR, and BTR has only one medical college named Kokrajhar medical college and Hospital. Adding another new medical college at Chirang will help the students aspiring to pursue medical science as their career.

6. Hotel & Tourism Management Institute | Bodoland

A new college or institute in the Hotel and Tourism sector will be constructed in the Bodoland Territorial Region as part of the third Bodo peace accord. So far, no single Hotel & Tourism Management Institute exists in BTR.

The Government of India (GOI) will set up the Hotel & Tourism Management Institute in Bodoland. So far, in which district of BTR this new college will be built still needs to be clarified. Once we get any update regarding this institute development from the Public domain, we’ll share it here.

Establishing the Hotel & Tourism Management Institute will be very helpful to students who want to pursue careers in Hotel Industry and Tourism Industry.

7. Regional Campus of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University | Udalguri

Udalguri is Bodoland’s second-highest educational hub district, but it doesn’t have any universities or professional colleges like engineering and medical colleges.

The Regional campus of the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) is built at Bhairabkunda in the Udalguri district as part of the third Bodo peace agreement.

The people of the Udalguri district must travel to another district to pursue their higher education. However, it will end soon as there is a plan to set up a regional campus of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Udalguri, as per the BTR agreement.

8. Bodoland Movement Memorial Museum | Bodoland

Bodoland Movement was launched by the All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) in 1986 with the demand for a separate state for the Bodo community. Father of the Bodos and then-president of ABSU Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma was the great leader of the Bodoland Movement.

As part of the third Bodo peace agreement, the GOI will soon build a Bodoland Movement Memorial Museum in respect of the Bodoland movement. The purpose of building that museum is to collect, preserve, interpret, and display objects of that event for study and education for the public.

The Bodoland Movement Memorial Museum will help people to gain knowledge and learn more about the Bodoland movement.

9. National Institute of Technology | Udalguri

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) is the top premier engineering college (centrally owned and funded by the Government of India) after the IITs. There are 31 NITs in India, and Assam has one NIT in Silchar. NIT Silchar, located in the Cachar district, is the only NIT in Assam.

So far, there are no two NITs in any state of India. If the demand for NIT Udalguri is carried out, then Assam will be the first state with 2 NITs.

NIT Udalguri

The GOI comes with the decision to set up an NIT engineering college in Udalguri, BTR, as part of the BTR agreement. It will be the first NIT in the BTR region.

When will the NIT Udalguri establishment will be carried out is not mentioned anywhere.

The Kokrjahar district of BTR has two engineering colleges; the other three districts, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri, don’t have any engineering colleges. Udalguri will soon get one, as one engineering college in Udalguri is currently under construction.

NIT Udalguri, if turned into reality, will make it 2nd engineering college in Udalguri and the 4th one in the entire BTR.

10. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya | Bodoland

Four additional Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) to be constructed in the four districts of BTR.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is a residential school owned and centrally operated by the Govt of India. JNV classes are from class 6 to class 12 that impart quality education to the students. Every year the JNV conducts a JNV entrance examination to admit students to Class 6.

As per the government policy, one Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) is to be established in each district of India. There are 661 JNVs in India, of which 649 are currently operational. To date, there are no districts in India with two JNVs. 

The four districts of BTR also have JNV schools, as listed below: 

  • JNV in Kokrajhar is located in Basugaon
  • JNV in Chirang is located in Bijni
  • JNV in Baksa is located in Barama
  • JNV in Udalguri is located in Sonai Gaon

If additional JNV schools are constructed in each district of the Bodoland (BTR), it will be the first time in all of India that there will be two JNVs in the district.

1. Bodoland Institute of Rural Development | Kokrajhar

Rural Development is improving the quality of life of rural people. Rural Development education plays a vital role in education.

A new Bodoland Institute of Rural Development will be constructed soon at Gossaigaon under the Kokrajhar district by the Government of Assam (GOA) as part of the third bodo peace accord in Bodoland (BTR).

The establishment of the Bodoland Institute of Rural Development will help those students who want to pursue careers in the Rural Development sector.

Once the details are out regarding the establishment we’ll update here.

2. Polytechnic and Vocational Training Institute

Polytechnic is an engineering diploma and vocational training course provided by the Institution. In BTR there are only two polytechnic Colleges.

Apart from that Singlimari, Horisinga, Basbari, and Gabardhana areas of BTR will get the Polytechnic and Vocational Training Institute as written in the 3rd bodo peace agreement.

Chirang Polytechnic

Chirang Polytechnic is located in Bijni, that focuses on imparting technical knowledge and skills to students in engineering. It offers diplomas in engineering branches mainly in-

Civil Engineering

Electrical Engineering

Agricultural Engineering.

Udalguri Polytechnic

Udalguri Polytechnic is situated in Bhergaon under the Udalguri district.

3. Organic University | Bodoland

Organic University (OU) is a unique and most diverse Educational, Research, and Extension hub for organic agriculture.

Till now there is no Organic university in the BTR Region. Most of the people of BTR are farmers, and they lead their lives by cultivating or farming. If the GOA will construct the Organic University the local people of BTR are be beneficial.

There are only one organic University in India located in Gujrat.

4. Veterinary College/Hospital | Baksa

The Veterinary College is offering specialised courses like- Bachelor in Veterinery Science (B.V.Sc.) & Animal Husbandry (A.H.) degree and  Masters in Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) and Ph.D. degree

In the near future BTR also get Veterinary College/Hospital at Kumarikata in Baksa district as part of the third bodo peace agreement.

setting up of the veterinary College/Hospital will be a great opportunity for the local students of the Baksa district as well as the BTR region who are interested in pursuing a career in the Veterinary sector.

Till now, there is no complete information about the construction of the institution.

5. Institute of Paramedical and Nursing Sciences | Bodoland

Institute of Paramedical and Nursing Sciences is offering the students mainly professional courses or bachelor’s degrees in specific departments like nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT), Pharmacy, Optometry etc.

There is only one regional Institute of Paramedical and Nursing Sciences in India, which is located at Zemabawk, Aizawl (Mizoram).

Most of the students of BTR region will also get a chance to pursue the courses who are interested in Paramedical and Nursing Sciences once the institution is built.

6. Provincialization of the College of Music and Fine Arts | Kokrajhar

The Kokrajhar Music & Fine Arts  College was established in the year 1996. Kokrajhar Music & Fine Arts  College is located in Habrubari, Kokrajhar. The College offers two courses namely, Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) and Bachelor of Music (B.Music).

7. Birsa Munda Cultural Complex | Bodoland

Birsa Munda was an Indian tribal freedom fighter, who belongs to the Munda tribe. He was born on 15 November 1875, in the Ranchi district of the Bengal Presidency. He was regarded as the Dharati Baba (Father of the Earth) by the Mundas. He took part in the Indian Independence Movement (1847-1947).

In the name of the great tribal freedom fighter, Birsa Munda BTR will get a cultural complex in the region as part of the agreement in the 3rd bodo peace accord.

8. Swami Vivekananda Youth Centre | Bodoland

Yoga is a practice that improves our strength, balance, and flexibility. Practicing yoga every day can remove stress and improves our mental health. It can also inspire us to live a healthy life.

Swami Vivekananda was an Indian Hindu monk, philosopher, author, religious teacher, and the chief follower of the Indian mystic Ramakrishna. His original name is Naredranath Dutta. He was born on 12 January 1863 in Kolkata. Swami Vivekananda plays a key role in introducing Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world.

In BTR there are only a few yoga centres located in. In respect of Swami Vivekananda, the GOA has decided to build a yoga center in the area of BTR. The setting up of a yoga center in the BTR area would be beneficial for the locals.

9. Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Multi-Purpose Cultural Auditorium | Bodoland

Apart from the college auditoriums, there is only one additional auditorium in BTR that is located in Kokrajhar. Bodofa Cultural Complex Kokrajhar is the only additional auditorium in the whole BTR.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was an Assamese playback singer, lyricist, musician, poet, actor, filmmaker, and politician. He was widely known as Sudha Kontho (Cuckoo) for his sweet voice. Hazarika was born on 8 September 1926 in Sadiya.

As part of the third bodo peace accord, GOA has agreed to build Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Multi-Purpose Cultural Auditorium in memory of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in the BTR area.

10. Gorkha Bhawan | Chirang

Gorkha Bhawan will be build to make the people of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) avail of all boarding & lodging facilities at an affordable rate at Chirang in Bodoland (BTR).

11. Kheraishali Centre for Bodo Art and Culture with Tribal Art Gallery cum Museum | Udalguri

Bathou is the original religion of the bodos. In Bathou religion Kherai is the biggest festival for the bodo pople. Many bodo people take part and enjoy the Kherai festival. Kheraishali is a sacred place where bodo people worship their traditional god.

The decision of making a Kheraishali Centre for Bodo Art and Culture with Tribal Art Gallery cum Museum will be beneficial for the Bodo community at Bhergaon, Udalguri district, under the BTR region.

12. Bathou Harimaphuri | Baksa

Bathouism ( Bathou) is a folk religion of Boro people. The meaning of Bathou is five principles Bar (air), Orr (fire), Haa (Land), Dwi (Water), and Okhrang (Sky). Bathou Harimaphuri is a temple for Bathou religion.

As part of the 3rd bodo peace accord the GOA has signed to build a Bathou Harimaphuri at Kumarikata, Baksa in the area of BTR.

To date, we didn’t get any proper information regarding that, once the information is out we will update here.
