The Durand Cup is termed the oldest football tournament club in the Asia continent and the fifth in the world, and it first started in 1888 at Shimla, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. Since then, this Durand Cup domestic football competition has been played in India annually.

The Durand football tournament (Durand Cup) was named after the founder of the Durand Cup – Sir Henry Mortimer Durand. Sir Henry was the foreign secretary of India from 1884 to 1894. Initially, the Durand Cup was played only between the Armed Forces (British Armed Forces, Indian Army, and other Armed Units). Later the tournament was opened to Civilian teams. Mohammedan (I-League) team was the first civilian team to win the Durand Cup in 1940 (Pre-Independence Day).

Post Independence Day, in the first Durand Cup competition, Hyderabad City Police defeated Mohun Bagan AC by 1-0.
